Why Hydration Matters for Growing Kids

Most children don't drink enough water — and it affects everything from their focus to their mood. Here's how to make hydration a natural part of your family's day.

Water is essential for nearly every function in the human body — and children are especially vulnerable to dehydration because they lose water quickly through activity and growth. Yet most kids simply don't drink enough.

Signs of mild dehydration in children include fatigue, difficulty concentrating, headaches, and irritability — symptoms that are often mistaken for hunger or behavioral issues. Before reaching for a snack, try offering a glass of water first.

Make water the default drink at meals and snacks. Limit juice, sports drinks, and sodas — these are high in sugar and can actually contribute to dehydration. If your child resists plain water, infuse it with fruit slices or fresh mint.

A fun water bottle can make a big difference. Let your child pick one they love and keep it filled and accessible throughout the day. Set gentle reminders, especially during hot Las Vegas summers when dehydration risk is higher.

Foods also contribute to hydration. Cucumbers, watermelon, strawberries, and oranges are all high in water content and make excellent snacks that support your child's fluid intake naturally.

Quick Tips

  • Make water the default drink at every meal
  • Infuse water with fruit for natural flavor
  • Let kids pick a fun water bottle they'll use
  • Offer hydrating foods like watermelon and cucumber
  • Watch for signs of dehydration: fatigue, headaches, irritability
